The celebrated Stahl house, a epitome of modernist architectural design, is up for sale for the very first time in its entire history.

This suspended home, nestled in the Hollywood Hills neighborhood, appeared on the real estate market this recent week. The price tag stands at a notable $25 million.

The Stahl family, who have owned the residence for its complete 65-year history, issued a announcement regarding their decision to sell. They noted that the property had become excessively demanding to care for.

Unassuming Inception

The origins of the Stahl house go back to May 1954, when the initial owners bought a mountainous patch of land in the previously undeveloped Hollywood Hills neighborhood for $13,500.

Despite the Stahl house growing into a famous representation of the city, the owners often stressed that "nobody famous ever lived here," referring to themselves as a "average family living in a luxury house."

Architectural Feat

The original design for the Stahl house was created during the warm season of 1956. However, many designers were originally wary to erect it on the difficult hillside.

In November 1957, the Stahls interviewed architect Pierre Koenig, who agreed to undertake the task. With assistance from the prominent Case Study program, led by a leading magazine editor, the family received support to commission Koenig.

The modernist program "focused on innovation" and "employing new materials and building in sites that maybe previously the techniques didn’t really allow," stated an expert from a local heritage organization. Soon after completion, a renowned architectural photographer captured what is possibly the most iconic photograph of the home. Taken through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the photograph features two women sitting in the home’s living room but looking to hover over the Los Angeles skyline.

"I believe the enduring impact of that photo is due to the way it conveys an notion about living in Los Angeles, an ambivalence about being both metropolitan and detached from it," commented a head of an architectural company and adjunct professor at a leading university.

Historic Designation

The home has enjoyed memorable features in movies, broadcast and promos, including several well-known titles from the late 1990s and early 2000s.

In 1999, the city designated the Stahl house a historic-cultural landmark, and in 2013, the house was added as a conserved building on the National Register of Historic Places.

Coming Custodianship

The home is still open for visits, as it has been for the last 17 years, although all slots are currently reserved through February. In their announcement regarding the sale, the family stated they would give "ample notice" before ending the tours.

The property description for the home highlights finding a buyer who will conserve the essence of the space.

The expert agreed that the decision of purchaser would be a crucial one, given the home’s history.

"In my view any time a longtime owner, and a guardianship like this, is changing ownership of a property like this, it always causes a little bit of a pause – because you cannot predict what the next owner, what their intentions will be.
